In the Okuizumo Region of Shimane, the fires of tatara ironmaking have continued to burn for over 1,000 years. Tatara operates by burning iron sand and charcoal in a clay furnace. Iron sand was chipped away from the mountains and trees were harvested and planted to make charcoal. The furnace itself was built then destroyed after each production cycle.
The iron produced was used by craftsmen to create the tools used in daily life. Tools were order made, and maintenance was done by the craftsmen that made them. We have been raised using tools to last.
